Police sealed off part of York railway station today after workmen unearthed a skull.
The discovery was made by Railtrack contractors carrying out welding work on Platform One.
British Transport Police officers cordoned off the area and a special tent was put up over the scene to protect any potential forensic evidence.
Statements were taken from the workmen who made the discovery.
Officers at the scene said they were still trying to establish whether a crime had been committed.
Police experts were expected to examine the scene later today.
A Railtrack spokeswoman said: "The workmen found the skull buried about eighteen inches down while they were carrying out engineering work. British Transport Police are now investigating."
Station manager Graham Yale said: "The station has been here 150 years and so you never know where something like this could have come from."
