LARGER, more important churches enjoy more revenue-raising options, like the English Heritage grants awarded to York Minster and Ripon Cathedral today.
But then, their bills are that much higher. It costs £3 million a year to run York Minster. That is why English Heritage chairman Sir Neil Cossons today called for tourism tax to be reinvested into the "historic environment".
The Government should explore this avenue. Our history is what attracts tourists to Britain. So an investment in the past is an investment in the future.
Just as importantly, admission to churches like York Minster must remain free so people can seek spiritual comfort within their walls whenever they need it.
