A post-mortem examination and a string of other tests could not reveal how a man came to die at his friend's home in York, an inquest was told.
Neil Clark, who had changed his name from Neil Hill, was found dead on a sofa at the home of his friend, Christopher Clafton, in Huby Court, Walmgate, in May last year.
Mr Clark, 42, from Hull, had a long history of depression and alcoholism and suffered liver disease.
A post-mortem examination could not discover any evidence of how he died and tests for alcohol and drugs were negative. Doctors had to record the cause of his death as "unascertained".
The inquest was told he may have had a fit in the early hours of the morning that he was found dead.
York Coroner Donald Coverdale, who recorded an open verdict, said Mr Clark may have had an epileptic fit, although there was no evidence of this.
