AFTER yet another fatal accident at Bilbrough junction on the A64 many people must be asking what can be done? But my question is why hasn't anything been done?

We often travel on the A1 to Alnwick and pass along a section of the road which is reduced to 50mph. It has lots of road markings and warning signs, but most important of all it has a number of speed cameras that automatically catch anyone who is travelling too fast.

Almost everyone slows down to 50mph on this stretch of road. If it can be put in force up north why not on the black-spots on the A64?

I could hardly believe that a police officer said that a reduction in speed to 50mph would not have helped the pedestrian (January 10). If a reduction of speed by 20mph is no help in preventing accidents and reducing injury, why bother with any traffic calming measures? Surely a pedestrian has more chance of survival if hit by a vehicle travelling at 50mph rather than 70mph.

Needless to say, our thoughts are with the family of the young man killed in the recent accident.
