HOWDEN, the commercial joinery division of furniture retailers MFI has expanded into brand new premises at the Alexandra Court retail park in James Street, York.
It gives the supplier and fitter of kitchens to major housebuilders, including the City of York Council and York Housing Association, almost 10,000 sq ft of space, double the area of its previous premises nearby on the estate.
And the move could double the company turnover.
A 15-year lease has been signed at £5 per square ft. and Howden's previous premises are now vacant for re-letting.
The deal represents a triumph for Briggs Burley, the commercial surveyors of Low Petergate, which marketed the sleek, silver building whose construction was speculatively financed by brothers Tony and John Raylor of the nearby Raylor Centre office complex in James Street.
Seven Howden employees have moved into the stylish structure but Tony Willey, manager, predicts one or two more may now be employed before the year is out.
