A passer-by who saved a man from being savaged by his own dog and an off-duty policeman who intervened in a nightclub brawl were today honoured for their bravery.
They were among dozens of officers and civilians who received commendations and letters of appreciation from Chief Superintendent Andy Parker, area commander of North Yorkshire police's western area.
Harrogate-based PC Jim Johnson was commended for rescuing a depressed and drunken woman who was threatening to throw herself from the Nidd Gorge Viaduct last August.
His colleague DC Peter Wakefield, of Harrogate CID, was honoured for detaining and arresting a man for a serious assault in a town nightclub in June.
Among the other officers to receive commendations were Knaresborough-based PC Jane Guymer and Special Constable Les Gunn, who helped rescue a distressed woman who threatened to jump from an A1 flyover.
David Hardy, from Dewsbury, received a letter of commendation from North Yorkshire police for coming to the aid of a man who was being attacked by his own Staffordshire Bull Terrier at a caravan park in Knaresborough in September.
A police spokesman said that without Mr Hardy's intervention, the man could have been killed.
And Michael Clift, from Boroughbridge, was honoured for rescuing a suicidal man from his fume-filled car in a field near the town in August.
Meanwhile, Special Constable Sue Threadgold, of Harrogate, received the Herbert Hey Trophy in recognition of her service to the Special Constabulary.
