Drivers battled through treacherous conditions after snow fell on the county's roads today - and forecasters have warned of more bad weather to come.

A PA weather spokesman warned the worst affected areas would be the North York Moors.

"Temperatures could drop as low as -3C or -4C in York and North Yorkshire," said the forecaster.

"Sleet and snow showers will affect most areas, including York."

A spokesman at Whitby police station, which covers the Malton and Pickering area, said today that drivers should take care and keep speeds low.

He said a particular blackspot was Golden Hill on the A64, where drivers were having to pass through in first gear.

Snow is expected to turn to rain, wind and warmer temperatures by Sunday.

Sunday and Monday will see temperatures finally rising above freezing after a bitterly cold spell.

Forecasters predict the potential for a lot of rain on Sunday and the start of next week and winds will be high in the region.

AA Roadwatch warned that conditions on the roads would be very icy and dangerous, particularly in East Anglia, north east England, and Scotland.

"Most of the country will see some snow flurries and there will be freezing across the country," said a spokeswoman.

"All roads in all areas will be very dangerous, so take care. Flurries of snow will fall on the North Sea coastal counties and there will substantial snow further north."
