I SEARCHED the shops in York for pillows smaller than standard size, but without success. Then I came across a stall in Selby market piled with duvets and pillows. I told the stall-holder the size of pillow I wanted. Though he hadn't any on the stall, he said he could make one for me. I asked the price. "Three pounds," he said. I thought that was very reasonable and ordered two.
The following Monday I returned to collect the pillows and the man said they were ready - but the price was a bit different.
"Well," I said, "you quoted me six pounds for two". "Yes," he replied, "but it's only four". I was completely taken aback.
I returned home with two beautifully-made pillows, a more than satisfied customer.
