Leptospirosis is a serious and concerning disease for dog owners. It was encouraging to see that your newspaper article drew readers' attention to this matter (Disease threat for dogs, December 20).
However, several of my clients have commented on the article and were very worried for their dog's safety. Owners will be reassured to know that routine yearly booster vaccinations for dogs provide effective protection against leptospirosis. Unvaccinated dogs are at risk and I hope that this article encourages owners to have their dogs vaccinated thereby preventing further animal suffering.
I am pleased to note that we have seen no increase in cases in our practice here in York. This is probably because most people keep their dog's vaccinations up to date each year.
