A 30-year-old man has appeared before a North Yorkshire court accused of murdering his father.

Scarborough magistrates agreed to grant bail to Gordon Leslie Morrison, a scaffolder, of Queen's Drive, Whitby, who was accused of murdering his father, Harry William Morrison, 56, also a scaffolder, in Whitby Market Place late last Friday night. The public gallery in the court was packed to capacity with several members of the family standing to hear the evidence outlined by Crown Prosecutor John Hargraves.

Morrison's solicitor, John Coxon, successfully applied for bail after telling the magistrates that Morrison would have support from his family. The presiding magistrate, Pat Richardson, said they would grant Morrison bail, on condition that he underwent a medical examination, observed an 8pm to 7am curfew and lived at his home. The case was adjourned until January 25, when Morrison will appear at Whitby court.
