Hero of the hour Jamie Benn admitted he "saved the best until last" as his touchline conversion with the final kick of the game earned York Wasps their first point of the season yesterday.

Benn needed to add the extras to Leroy McKenzie's last-gasp try in the corner to salvage a 20-20 draw with Hunslet Hawks at Huntington Stadium.

He was able to put an error-laden performance to the back of his mind to coolly slot the ball home - but then conceded it was a game they should have already won.

"The way I was kicking all afternoon I was just glad it went over," said Benn, referring to three previous missed conversion attempts.

Although they were all difficult kicks he said: "I should be kicking them. That's why I'm here. We could have lost because of it.

"It was a nice one to get, especially because it was in the last 30 seconds and David Plange (Hunslet coach) was giving me some stick from the touchline behind me.

"As soon as I saw it was going straight I knew I'd kicked it. The others weren't far away but I saved the best til last. I was just glad it counted.

"But we shouldn't have had to do that. We're all a bit disappointed because it should have been two points. It was a game we should have won.

"We had our opportunities but we didn't take them and we made too many mistakes. I made about 20. I had a shocker."

There were only 20 seconds left on the clock when McKenzie got on the end of Paddy Handley's kick for the vital score.

However, Benn said they had maintained their belief right up to the end. "We knew we weren't going to lose the game. We were trying to keep the ball alive. Sometimes it comes off, sometimes it doesn't," said Benn.

Coach Lee Crooks was pleased to pick up a point but said: "I'd say that was probably the worst game of rugby I've ever seen.

"It's nice to get off the mark but it's quite ironic that our first point comes from probably our worst display. We didn't play like we said we'd play. We made far too many fundamental errors. We wanted to do the basics right but we didn't play well at all.

"But this game's a funny game. The main thing is we're up and running. The players can take solace that their never say die attitude and commitment has got them a point."

York looked well in control when they led 10-6 at half-time but Hunslet stole the initiative early in the second half.
