The 18-year-old man was approached by another teenager as he waited for a cab at a taxi rank in Stonebow, York, at 2am.
He was asked to look after a plastic bag by the second man, who walked off before returning and asking for money.
When the victim said no, the other man produced a knife and snatched his mobile phone.
The attacker is described as being white, 18 to 19 years old and of medium build.
He had short, dark hair that was cropped at the sides, and was wearing a dark, v-neck sweatshirt and a gold sovereign ring on his right index finger.
