YORK-BORN Steve McClaren has emerged as red-hot favourite to suceed Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Sir Alex, who retires in 18 months, is growing in admiration for the 39-year-old he recruited from Derby County.

"Steve McClaren is impressing everyone at the club right now," he said.

Former Nunthorpe School pupil McClaren replaced Brian Kidd as Fergie's right-hand man 18 months ago and had an immediate impact, helping his new club to the Treble.

Striker John Williams, released by York City last week, was hoping to make his debut for Darlington at Lincoln today after completing a move to Quakers.
