The rivalry of the red and white roses has been suspended by last month's flooding.
The historical enmity of Lancashire and Yorkshire has been put on hold by Bolton pensioner Alf Hales.
The 79-year-old took to the streets of his home town to raise cash for the victims of the worst flooding in York in living memory.
He makes the trip to York on Thursday to present a cheque for nearly £500 to Lord Mayor Councillor Shan Braund.
And his efforts will continue until he reaches his target of £5,000.
The war hero and retired nurse has raised more than £8,000 for various charities after starting fundraising following the Dunblane tragedy.
He said: "I don't do it for the publicity. I do it because I care."
Mr Hales visits shops, homes and pubs in Bolton asking for donations.
Councillor Braund said: "I think it is a tremendous personal effort and evidence of the extent of concern since York suffered the biggest ever flood in the city in November.
"I was so delighted with Mr Hales' incredible efforts that I wanted to meet him personally and thank him."
Mr Hales said: "The devastation to people's homes and livelihoods is terrible and I think that many people would agree this is a worthwhile cause."
