I read with interest the Evening Press article 'Ice maiden backs hospice', describing pool player Sarah Ellerby's exploits in defeating male opposition at McArthurGlen (December 11).

As a male I have never been able to understand why a certain variety of my own sex cannot take defeat by a woman.

To those who said that in spite of losing, they could have beaten Sarah, the reason they didn't is simple. They weren't good enough.

Such emotions are not confined to losing to women. Try being in a pub if your football team has beaten theirs, or winning a pub quiz. The cover-ups come thick and fast. Accepting defeat by better opposition - man, woman or team - is part of maturity. Sarah has obviously discovered success is a very good way of separating the sheep from the goats.

Good luck to her.
