Ebor Bishopthorpe played most of their first division game with Drum with just ten players and if being outnumbered wasn't enough, they gave away three penalties - yet amazingly they still managed to avoid defeat.
The pub side played well despite being a man down and after their goalkeeper Jethro Chapple saved Thompson's spot-kick they took command, scoring through Richard Suddaby and Karl Walsh to take a 2-0 interval lead.
As is so often the case as soon as Ebor's 11th player arrived things started going downhill with the result that they soon found themselves on level terms.
First Dan Thompson made amends for his earlier penalty miss by putting away a second spot-kick and then Steve Baker headed home an equaliser via a deflection.
Despite Drum pressing for the winner, it was Ebor who re-took the lead as Walsh struck for a second time to put the home side 3-2 up.
But those spot-kick wobbles resurfaced as they conceded another award, which Thompson converted to make it 3-3 at the full time whistle.
At the top of the division York Nomads opened up a three-point gap as Simon Drake steered them on the way with a 26th-minute opener against York Police.
After the half-time break Gaz Gavin scored twice to seal victory for the leaders by a 3-0 margin.
St John's College moved up to second place at the expense of Clifton Hotel whom they beat 2-1 with Grey and Whalley doing the damage for the students to maintain their unbeaten record.
In the second division CB United collected their first points of the season with a 9-4 win over a nine-man Clifton Rangers.
Neil Ducey led the goal-scoring way with a hat-trick. Substitute Lee Jefferson struck twice and there was a goal each for Cuthbert, Haigh and Dunn to add to an own goal from the Clifton secretary, Dave Craggs. In reply Tom Adie and Ben Firth each netted a brace for the visitors.
Yearsley Grove now replace CB at the bottom due to the fact that they went down 7-1 to Rawcliffe United with substitute Duncanson hitting the lone reply.
Woodthorpe Warriors lost their unbeaten third division record when they just lost out in a ten-goal thriller with Acomb Athletic.
In the 6-4 scoreline Dean Kilbride netted four of the visitors' goals, with brother Richard and Mike Van der Heever hitting the other two. In reply Tim Hudson scored a hat-trick for Woodthorpe and Marshall added the fourth.
In the bottom of the table clash Gimcrack got the better of Cygnet to record their first win of the season thus leaving their opponents as the only team in the league not to have tasted victory.
Victory came about through goals from Gaz Evans, Alex Rouse, Mark Mitchell and Kelly Codling (2). Burrows and Morrison hit the consolation goals for Cygnet.
In the long-outstanding Garry Penrose Trophy second round tie at Rose & Crown, visitors Old Grey Mare went on a spree to record an 11-1 victory.
Graham Donaldson led the way with four, Terry Taylor and Emlyn Jones each netted a brace, while Lee Barker, Jason Whattam and Chris Heath rounded things off. The lone Rose & Crown reply came from the boot of Bradley Dunne.
In the third round Penrose tie Haxby United are celebrating a place in the semi-final, although this they could do prior to the game itself.
It came about as Haxby United beat their reserve side 3-1 thanks to goals from Stericker (2) and Barnard with Adams replying for the second team.
The league now takes a two-week break, resuming with a full league programme on January 7.
