A footpath in York city centre which was submerged in the recent flooding has been closed to enable checks to be made on trees.
City of York Council closed off Dame Judi Dench Walk from its junction with Marygate to the end of the footpath at Lendal Bridge until further notice while officials carry out checks on about a dozen elm trees.
A spokesman for the council said: "One tree has already been uprooted and fallen on to the footpath.
"The fact that this stretch of path has been flooded for such an extended period coupled with the pressure of the water seems to have weakened some of the trees."
Council officials will decide as a result of the inspection whether the elm trees need to be removed.
