FUR farming will be banned in England and Wales following a winding-down period. The Fur Farming (Prohibition) Act 2000 prohibits the keeping of animals solely or primarily for slaughter for the value of their fur. The winding-down period is to be until at least the end of 2002.
Countryside Minister Elliot Morley said: "Fur farming is not consistent with a proper value and respect for animal life. This is a moral issue that goes beyond welfare considerations. In the 21st century, animals should not be killed just for the business of stripping the skins off their backs."
