York bus stops could one day carry electronic screens telling passengers when the next bus is coming, thanks to satellite technology.

FirstYork is trialling a black box on one of its buses that provides by-the-second information about the vehicle's location.

The information, beamed back to the depot, is being used to test out timetables on the company's proposed new "Metro-style" bus routes across the city.

But commercial manager John Fletcher said the technology could one day be carried on all buses and be used tube-style to provide real-time information at bus stops.

"This is the future of the buses," he said.

A consultation document on First York's new routes has drawn more than 4,000 responses.

The responses are being analysed, with six main areas of concern already highlighted.

FirstYork bosses will consider altering the provisional bus routes in the following key areas:

* Strensall to the city centre without a stop at Monk's Cross

* Bishopthorpe to the train station without going via Skeldergate Bridge

* More buses from Dringhouses to Acomb

* More frequent services from Stamford Bridge to Poppleton.

General manager Brian Asquith said 47 per cent of people thought the proposals were "good" or "very good".
