Harrogate's home run ended on six in a tale of two penalties and two yellow cards against Wharfedale at Claro Road.

They were set for revenge over a side which whitewashed them at Threshfield last month, leading 18-14 with five minutes to go when Wharfedale snatched victory with two penalties.

Adam Mounsey was the Wharfedale hero, narrowing the gap to a point with his first kick and then, wide out on the right, he landed a superb kick.

Then with the game about to enter injury time Lee Cholewa had a nerve-jangling chance to win the game for Harrogate with an easier shot at goal. But he pulled his kick wide of the right hand post, having earlier clattered a post with a conversion.

Two Cholewa penalties sandwiched a try by skipper Rhys Morgan which had given Harrogate a dream start.

Mounsey cut the lead with a straight-forward penalty after 23 minutes but Harrogate remained in charge until lock John Dudley was sent to the bin for entering the fray from the side.

While he was kicking his heels Wharfedale scored a try when No 8 Russ Buckroyd broke on the blindside of a maul on the 22 and touched down in the corner to make the half time score 13-8.

Wharfedale were the better team in the opening minutes of the second half and Mounsey kicked two penalties in a minute to give his side the lead and, when Mike Worden was sin-binned for taking a man out in the air, the home support feared the worst.

But this time Harrogate scored a superb try while a man short. Centre Matt Duncombe made a jinking run from inside the 22 before Morgan set up a ruck. The ball was recycled and spun left, Richard Wade appeared in the line and gave a perfectly-timed pass to James Tapster, who scored his 13th try of the season.

Then came the brace of penalties with Mounsey the Wharfedale hero.
