AFTER a meeting with Selby MP John Grogan, I realised he was not prepared to speak for the residents of Naburn against proposed mining under the village.
I accept that people in the area have already experienced subsidence as a result of mining, but given the effects of the severe flooding we experienced recently, to pursue plans to mine under the village would undoubtedly aggravate the already major problem of flooding.
The planning permission for the mine was granted in 1975. Long before climate change was generally accepted we were getting more rain, thus creating a greater chance of flooding in villages such as Naburn.
Surely Mr Grogan would agree that a few tons of coal retrieved from under the village would not be worth the resulting misery of the villagers.
The planning permission for the mine can only be repealed by parliament.
Since our MP will not speak for us, who will?
Will Stanton,
Naburn, York.
