STAMINA and spirit were the key ingredients in York Rugby Union Club under-tens' advance into the next round of the Yorkshire Cup.

Initially drawn in Pool 'A' of the preliminary round, York saw off a trio of opposition, starting with Wetherby, who were beaten 10-5.

Next up were Ripon who were routed 15-0 before Moortown found York's forwards too powerful in a 25-15 success.

As winners York then met Pool 'B' table-toppers Old Leodensians. Keener handling and stout defence enabled York to create a 15-5 half-time lead.

However, with just three minutes left the score was deadlocked at 15-15. But York summoned one last huge effort to break through with a final decisive drive to win 20-15.

The deserving squad comprised Greg Turner, Ben Johnson, Aron Robinson, Sam Greenwood, Luke Powley, Rhys Mills, Luke Bowler, Sam Murgatroyd, Matthew Appleton, Charlie Herriott, Max Harland, Alastair Jackson and James Hepworth.

York under-11s made it three out of three wins over Moortown.

After a brace of victories already posted this term the York side stormed to a 33-0. Among the try scorers were Hawking (3), Ashman and Singleton.

Undefeated York under-eights kept their maximum record intact with a hat-trick of home victories.

In the opening Moortown match York won 35-20 with tries from Oliver Snook, Jack Maud, Tom Whitaker, Adam Johnson, Jared Bambridge and Daniel Harrison (2).

Thorne were much tougher defensively, but York powered to a 10-0 triumph, Charlie Greenwood and Adam Johnson crossing.

In the third game, also against Moortown, there was only going to be one winner once Sebastian Sim scored an early try. Maud and Johnson followed suit for a 15-10 win.

York under-nines 'A'-side routed Thorne 35-5, with six of their nine players scoring - Thomas Brown, Ben Hepworth, Toby Spark, James Tyas, Charlie Nicholson and Liam Killen (2).

Despite strong tackling from Jack Bass and a try apiece for Joe Williams and Tristan Punnett the under-nines 'B'-side perished 30-10 to Moortown.
