Clifton Hotel moved to within one point of first division leaders York Nomads in the York Sunday Afternoon League.
Clifton had an emphatic 7-2 win at Ebor Bishopthorpe in which David Newton scored his third consecutive hat-trick.
Paul Bedingham scored twice, Carl O'Brien once and Michael Fox, man of the match for the second week running, also hit the target. Both Ebor goals came in the last ten minutes.
Clifton are now just a point behind York Nomads, who were without a game, but the pub side do have a game in hand which, if won, would take them to the top.
St John's College got back to winning ways after three consecutive draws with a 5-1 victory at Rookes United.
The students scored on 17 and 27 minutes but a curling free kick from Sean Mahoney brought the home side back into contention.
In the last 12 minutes the visitors scored three times with Smith netting twice and Whalley completing a hat-trick.
In the only other first division game, York Police took the points at Firkin 103 thanks to goals from Ogden and Ward in a 2-1 win. Moynihan scored for Firkin.
The second division game between York College of Law and Rawcliffe United was abandoned in the 57th minute with the home side leading 5-1.
The students had just been awarded a penalty and, following two dismissals for the Goole outfit, the referee had no choice but to halt the game.
In the only third division game to take place, Central Science Laboratory won 3-0 at Gimcrack thanks to goals from Morris, Turley and an own goal.
Two Garry Penrose third round cup ties took place with the holders, Fossway, cruising through to the last four with a 9-1 win over Black Dog Camblesforth.
There were four goals for Pete Sinclair, two for Elmer and one each for Ogden, Franklin plus an own goal. Gaynor hit the consolation for the visitors.
Burton Stone booked their place in the Penrose semi-finals as Paul Sutton scored the only goal of the game in the first half against Clifton Rangers.
The final league meeting of the year will be held on Monday at the Civil Service Club on Boroughbridge Road, Acomb, York, starting at 8pm.
