VISITING London about a year ago, I was alarmed at the fact that it was never safe to cross the road in the first couple of seconds after the appearance of the 'green man' on the traffic lights.
Cars kept on coming when it was obvious the light had changed to red for them.
"At least this doesn't happen in York," I thought. However, I've noticed this criminal habit spreading out from the capital. Many York motorists, some bus-drivers included, now seem to take it for granted that pedestrians will meekly accept this dangerous infringement of their rights. The most distressing aspect of this is that it is no longer possible to teach children that it is safe to cross when the green man appears.
I urge all those concerned about dangerous driving to note the registration numbers of offending vehicles and inform the police.
