Cavaliers 'A' suffered a surprising defeat away to University by 3 to 2 points. The previously winless University team finally produced a full strength team and duly inflicted a memorable victory over the league leaders.
Two of the key moments of the match were Cavalier 'A's' captain Richard Hardy declining an offer of a draw and then proceeding to lose the game and Steve Huxley agreeing a draw in the final game to finish.
Cavaliers 'A' bounced back from their humiliating defeat the following week when they played the team in joint first place, Shepherds.
For the match Cavaliers 'A' brought in the strongest player in Yorkshire, Richard Palliser for his first game of the season.
It was a move viewed by most players as against the spirit of
the Evening League, if not against the rules.
Palliser duly won his game and further wins from Peter Cloudsdale, Richard Hardy and two draws from Steve Huxley and Owen Robson sealed a 4-2 victory. For Shepherds Keith Goodey had an excellent win over an in-form Paul Hopwood.
After this win over Shepherds, Cavaliers 'A's' main challenge for the title looks like coming from Minster Inn.
They are unbeaten this season, only dropping a point against Lady Anne Middletons.
Their game against Cavaliers 'B' resulted in a comfortable win by 4-1 points and saw the return to action of Paul O'Neill following injury.
He played on board one and drew with Paul Townsend. Wins from Mark White, Paul Anderson and Mick Beavers, and further draws from Adam Ismail and Steve Whitehead, ensured the victory.
The top two, Minster Inn and Cavaliers 'A' finally met last week and the unconfirmed result was a draw.
In other matches University made it two wins in a row with a 4-2 win over Whippersnappers, although University slipped back to their bad habits and defaulted the bottom two boards.
The winners for University were Scott Fraser, Martin Cook, D Sivell and E Libertini.
Another team defaulting a board was Kings, who defaulted board five against Lady Anne
Middletons.
This proved crucial as Peter Blacker and Rachel Mothersill won their games and a further point would have given them a draw.
Rachel Mothersill's win was a particularly fine effort coming from a piece down to destroy the hapless Neville Pearce.
As it was, wins by Tony Slinger, Tim Turner and Phil Mander gave Lady Anne Middletons the win.
Yorkshire Under 125's crashed out of the County Championship to Durham by 7-5.
The match featured four York players and included the following win by Owen Robson.
