Plymouth Argyle are fighting against the clock to have their Home Park pitch fit for the arrival of York City on Saturday.
A spokesman at the Devon club admitted today the pitch was "very, very wet" but insisted the match could still go ahead.
"We had about an inch of rain the night before last but with the strong winds it has dried considerably. The groundstaff are working around the clock and have been scooping water off in buckets and if the forecasts are correct we anticipate that the pitch will probably be okay."
The spokesman said the position would be reviewed tonight and talks would be held with City, who are due to begin their journey south at 10am tomorrow.
"If there is a serious doubt we will stop them travelling because we have had two abortive trips ourselves recently and we know how frustrating it is for players and supporters, but at this time we are hopeful."
A new date for York City's twice-postponed LDV Vans Trophy tie with Darlington will not be set until after Tuesday night's FA Cup replays involving both clubs.
As reported on this website yesterday, last night's match was postponed for the second time in the space of eight days.
After a 4pm pitch inspection, match referee Trevor Jones deemed the pitch unplayable with standing water on areas of the Bootham Crescent pitch.
The rescheduling of the tie has been complicated by both clubs' continued involvement in the FA Cup, with City facing Reading and Darlington up against Luton in second round replays on Tuesday.
Should City and the Quakers go out of the FA Cup then Saturday, January 6, is a possible date for the LDV Vans Trophy tie.
As reported in the Evening Press this week, City's home League game with Carlisle on that Saturday has been rescheduled for January 9 because of the Cumbrians FA Cup third round tie with Arsenal.
Darlington are also facing a blank Saturday if they go out of the Cup because their scheduled league opponents, Southend United, are playing Kingstonian in the third round.
