I agree with Mrs Frost (Letters, December 9), Christmas is a magical time, especially when you think of the actual birth of Jesus.

The fact that commercialism has all but taken over is very largely due to us, the consumer, supporting it. If it is a younger age-group that is targeted by the 'Magic Chrimbo' type of commercialism, isn't it down to us Christians to spread the message amongst our friends, family and colleagues? As Mrs Frost says, there are still a lot of us about.

Huntington has two services especially designed for children called "Christingle" services.

Many do not feel comfortable about knocking on doors, or standing in Parliament Street preaching to the crowds.

However, we can all speak openly about our faith to those who know us and, what better time to introduce the Christmas message than now?

On Sunday at Monks Cross, near the information centre, the churches of Huntington are holding an open service. It starts at 11am with carol singing.

The Church Boys' and Girls' Brigade band will be playing.

So, why not arrange to go shopping on Sunday, drop in to the service and hear the real message of Christmas amid all the trappings of the commercial side? Julie Dickens,

...I'm sure you are just playing devil's advocate when you publish a picture of Craig Phillips to highlight Jean Frost's letter (December 9), because the letter itself makes no reference to Monks Cross shopping park whatsoever.

We at Monks Cross have a made a conscious effort to avoid being rudely commercial about Christmas.

This is why we chose the December 1 as the starting point for all of our Christmas activities.

Craig Phillips was chosen to star at our lights switch-on because he is a good man who has been very unselfish and charitable this year by using his new- found fame and fortune for the good of others - particularly the Down Syndrome Association.

Our new Christmas grotto will donate all profits to local children's charity SNAPPY.

We are the main sponsor of Rocking Rudolph, the delightful Christmas float which travels around the district with the Minster Lions each year raising money for charity.
