STRIKE action by North Yorkshire firefighters has been averted after a colleague's sacking was suspended.

The unnamed leading fireman from Scarborough, who has been off work for three years because of work-related stress, was due to be dismissed under the capability clause of his contract.

A spokesman for the Fire Brigade Union (FBU) said: "We are responsible people and what we don't want is the public to suffer," he said.

"But we have to protect our members."

North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service confirmed the strike had been called off and the firefighter's notice period had been extended until "the dispute is resolved".
