Second division strugglers Clifton Rangers were involved in an epic York Sunday Afternoon League Gary Penrose second round tie with third division leaders Woodthorpe Warriors.

The game was eventually settled on penalties after extra time could not separate the sides.

Even then it was a close run thing as eight spotkicks were saved by the goalkeepers.

Paul Hutchinson in the Clifton goal saved four consecutive penalties and while his team mates missed their first two effort from the spot Tom Adie and Matt Varley sealed a 2-0 shoot-out victory for Rangers.

The game started with Tom Baker giving Clifton the lead but Woodthorpe hit back to go 2-1 up. Ben Firth levelled for Rangers and then Tom Neath gave them the lead after the restart.

Once again Woodthorpe equalised, only for Firth to give the second division side a 4-3 lead. However, the Warriors equalised yet again to send the game into extra time.

Although Ben Firth completed his hat-trick in the extra period, Woodthorpe squared the game once more to send the tie into the penalty shoot out at 5-5.

On target for Warriors in normal time were brothers Jody and Ross Haw while Tim Hudson netted a hat-trick.

A gap is beginning to open up at the top of the first division.

Leaders York Nomads exposed Drum's fragile defence as they romped home 7-1 thanks to Gareth Gavin (3), Steve Jefferson (2), Simon Drake and Phil Reeves.

Second placed Drax United won 6-0 against Ebor Bishopthorpe with goals by Cunnington (3), Petch (2) and Bowers.

Clifton Hotel also kept a clean sheet as they won 4-0 with goals by Newton (3) and Phillips at Rookes United. It is so tight at the bottom that if Rookes had won they would have moved into the top half of the table, instead they now drop to bottom place.

St John's College remain fourth despite being the only team unbeaten in the first division. They drew 1-1 with York Police, their fourth stalemate in six games, Dave Hopper equalising the students' opener from Simpson.

The match between Cross Keys and Firkin 103 ended 2-2 as both clubs moved out of the relegation zone with just two points separating the bottom six sides.

Fossway extended their lead at the top of the second division to eight points as an Eddie Phillips hat-trick helped them to a 5-2 win over Black Dog Camblesforth. Pete Sinclair and Alan Whitehead hit the others with Nicholson and Newlove replying for the visitors.

Yearsley Grove secured their first points of the season with a 6-2 win at CB United, who are now left firmly rooted at the bottom. The visitors goals came from Chapman (2), Taylor, Harper, Castle and Duncanson with Mark and Mick Rollinson hitting the home side's consolations.

Pearson netted for Bubwith Hunters as they went down 6-1 at York College of Law.

In the third division, Saville AV moved to second with a 6-0 win against Acomb Athletic courtesy of Darren Haywood (4), Fenwick and Hubbery.

Rocky Depa scored twice and Tudor Carrington once as Rose and Crown beat Wigginton Grasshoppers 3-2, Andrade and O'Loughlin replying for Wigginton.

Matt Gomm led Central Science Laboratory to an 8-3 win at Old Grey Mare with a hat-trick.they way with a hat-trick, Chisham and Turley each netted twice while Quintero stuck the eighth. Chris Heath(2) and substitute Rowan Hillary scored for Old Grey Mare.
