IN a recent issue of the Press it was stated that Navigation Road got its name from the large pool of the Foss. Is this correct?
I think that there would be little navigation in that area, but directly behind Navigation Road is an inlet to the Rowntree Wharf, and that would be a navigation canal, for the use of barges carrying heavy consignments to Rowntree's. After all, there would be little possibility of much navigation in the swamp which was a defence of York in Roman-Viking times.
