I WRITE in support of Mr J Ibbot's letter of December 4 about the proposed new bus services. Those living along Acomb Road would find:

u No choice of service on Acomb Road. Six buses an hour instead of nine at present. No buses to Rougier Street, Ouse Bridge or Stonebow. The new Coppergate will be a good half-mile from the nearest homeward stop.

u The non-subsidised Tang Hall to Chapelfields service withdrawn. Chapelfields service halved in daytime and no evening buses - not a direct service either.

Adding the above to Mr Ibbott's changes (and presumably more of the same in every suburb), we have a devastating setback for the ordinary passengers who depend on the bus.

No-one objects to constructive change, but the stated aim of 21st century travel would be better served by ensuring that far more buses arrive on time, or at all.

Amid all the cuts, the Park and Ride services are to continue unscathed, with the concession of a few extra stops. When the Grimston Bar site began to operate, our No 7 Stonebow stop was banished 100 yards away to make room for the Park and Ride bay outside Marks & Spencer.

The same insensitive attitude to the traditional bus passenger seems to be the foundation for the new proposals.

...I AM surprised at the lack of any editorial comment on Mr Ibbott's letter. Other readers could easily imagine that his was the only voice of complaint whereas there is considerable opposition.

In addition to the points raised in Mr Ibbott's letter the proposals would mean no direct service from Strensall, Earswick or North Huntington to the hospital, theatre, railway station or colleges.

There would be no service at all between Link Road and New Lane to serve Huntington School and the all-weather pitch.

In the reverse direction, as the result of diverting services away from Lendal Bridge, passengers who at present use Exhibition Square would have either to walk to Stonebow or use three buses changing at Fossway and Monks Cross.

It would be interesting to know what has happened to the "massive consultation" promised by the bus company in your article on November 20 and what, if anything, City of York Council is doing in the matter.
