York were in devastating form with all four teams winning their latest Yorkshire Chess League matches.

York 'A' had an exceptionally strong team but initially struggled against a weak Wakefield team.

Early on most of York's players were making heavy weather of it against opponents considerably weaker than themselves, but in the end York's strength came through and they won 8-2 with victories for Richard Palliser, Paul Townsend, David Adams, David Wise, Scott Fraser, Alistair Cargill and Paul Hopwood, plus draws from Norman Stephenson and Jon Griffith.

Fraser's game against P Seymour was particularly spectacular and featured a queen sacrifice.

Here's how the game unfolded: white (P Seymour), black (Scott Fraser): 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. Nc3 Nc6 4. d4 cxd4 5. Nxd4 g6 6. Be3 Bg7 7. g3 Nf6 8. Bg2 Ng4 9. Nxc6 bxc6 10. Bd2 Qb6 11. 0-0 Ne5 12. York's attempt to win the Woodhouse Cup was helped by Hull's surprising 6-4 defeat at Doncaster.

York 'B'' had a tough game against in-form Pontefract 'A' but won 5-3. A notable performance was Barry Marshall's draw on top board.

Wins from Don Baldwin, Paul Johnson and Ewen Cameron and three further draws ensured York won the game in convincing style and extended their unbeaten run to three games.

York 'C' hammered Pontefract 'B' 6-2 with Richard Hardy, Norman Andrews, John Blades, John Lafferty and Mick Beavers all winning. David Findlay and Steve Webster both drew.

The result should keep York 'C' at the top of the Silver Rook League.

York 'D' completed the clean sweep for the home sides with a 5-2 win over Sheffield ''D'. York received two default wins at the start when Sheffield could only raise a team of six.

Two of York's most promising players, Tom Anderson and Chris Sommerville both won and Rodney Mitchinson also triumphed to ensure the victory.

The fourth round of the York Club Championship is on December 11. The draw is: Hardy v Marshall; Griffith v Bennett; Lockwood v Barber; Mitchinson v Johnson; Robson v Turner; Huxley v Cloudsdale; Knowles v Hopwood; Blacker v Pearce; Cornhill v Yousif; Cameron v Holliday; Fulton v Danks; Glasgow v Gower; Lafferty v Oates; Brooks v Findburg.

The City of York Viking Chess competition, which was such a big hit last year, is being staged at Lady Anne Middleton's Hotel, Skeldergate, York, between December 13 and 22.
