The Environment Agency looks set to win its race against time by finishing work on Gowdall's temporary flood defences before this weekend's high tides.

More than 100 Agency flood engineers have been working 18-hour days to com-plete the task which was originally given a Christmas deadline.

This was brought forward to Saturday because of the high tides expected on the River Aire over three days at the weekend.

Environment Agency spokesman David Wilkes said: "This news is a tribute to the people who have worked so hard on strengthening and repairing the defences over the last month.

"We've pulled out every stop to make sure the people of Gowdall don't suffer again."
