In their final North League game before the two-month mid-season break, City of York Ladies lost 3-0 at second-placed Sheffield, all the goals coming in the first-half.
As so often this season, York started brightly only to concede a goal after 15 minutes in virtually Sheffield's first attack.
Then, searching for the equaliser, York committed players forward and were caught by a fast Sheffield break, too few defenders back to prevent the second goal.
There was an element of fortune in Sheffield's third, the ball spinning in, deflected past goalkeeper Sarah Massen.
To their credit, York did not give up and enjoyed much of the second-half possession. They came close to scoring several times, only to be foiled by a post and some athletic saves by the Sheffield 'keeper.
York did however progress to the fourth round of the Hockey Association Trophy when their opponents Teddington withdrew from the competition just before Sunday's scheduled third round tie.
The Yorkshire League division two game between City of York Ladies II and Wensleydale was postponed.
Acomb Ladies' first team lost 3-1 at Sheffield after taking the lead when Sarah Clay intercepted the ball and scored after a strong run. Sheffield equalised before half-time from a penalty stroke. Acomb worked hard in the second-half, but the home side scored twice to win.
Tadcaster Ladies' first team won 5-2 at home to Doncaster III after going one down, but recovering to lead 2-1 at the interval.
Sarah Pedder equalised for Tadcaster after a one-two with Rebecca Cattle at a short corner. Just before half-time Lucy MacNamara put Tadcaster ahead with a well-struck shot from the top of the 'D'.
Tadcaster took control of the game in the second-half. Angela Mackay netted from close-range after a well-worked short corner. Doncaster were always dangerous on the break, but Tadcaster 'keeper Cath Webb made several outstanding saves. Pedder broke through the opposition defence to score Tadcaster's fourth goal.
Tadcaster finished off Doncaster with a fast break by Cattle, who slipped the ball square to Sarah Briggs to slot the ball through the Doncaster 'keeper's legs.
Tadcaster Ladies' first team are away to Netherwood on Saturday and the second team play Adel IV at a pitch to be decided.
