New warning road signs to highlight high-risk routes are set to appear on dangerous North Yorkshire Roads - as the Government predicts more than 90 deaths on sections of the A1 alone.
Roads where there are several times the number of fatalities as similar routes will be given a star rating under proposals being studied by Ministers - with a single star indicating the highest risk.
The sections of the A1 between Ferrybridge and Hook Moor and between Wetherby and Walshford are among the 11 most dangerous roads in Britain and are set to receive the new star-rating.
The Department of Transport has produced estimates of likely road deaths during the next 30 years on roads that have very high accident rates - 90 are predicted on the A1.
The Highways Agency confirmed improvements are taking place on both sections of road "with a view to improving traffic flow and safety in general".
The proposals have been put forward by the AA Foundation for Road Safety Research, which believes that fundamental flaws in road design are leading to thousands of avoidable deaths each year.
The Government has promised to cut the number killed and seriously injured in road accidents by 40 per cent by 2010.
