Mother's Day, Guy Fawke's Day or Father's Day are celebrated annually with aplomb. Shortly, there may be another Day for York Senior Citizens to celebrate a National Seniors' Day.
Wheels are turning for the House of Commons to approve such a fixed event as a Seniors' Day. This would take the shape of discounts, competitions and special event deals, but with added fun and benefits.
In 1966 a trial day was held in Banbury area, another in 1988, in the whole of Oxfordshire. Both were very successful.
For some time now, certain retail sectors, such as barbers, DIY stores, insurance companies and pubs, have given discounts to senior citizens. Leisure centres, taxis, cinemas, theatres, buses and trains have also been sympathetic.
You may warm to this idea. Indeed, with nearly 11 million pensioners accounting for 20 per cent of the population, it could be some party!
