York's Central Science Laboratory was announced as a Government 'Beacon' or-ganisation today as its "trailblazing" staff were praised for putting citizens first.
As part of the Modernising Government programme, the laboratory, at Sand Hut-ton, was picked out for its pioneering work in modernising training, develop-ment, diversity and procurement.
Speaking at the awards ceremony, Peter Stanley, chief executive of the Central Science Laboratory, said: "This distinction highlights the hard work of CSL's people.
"We are proud of this success and it will spur us on to seek out other improve-ments and to integrate best practice initiatives identified by benchmarking with others.
"CSL already uses the European Foundation for Quality Management Excellence Model and has been successfully reaccredited as an Investor in People.
"Becoming a Beacon organisation recognises how comprehensively the commitment to excellence runs throughout our culture."
Cabinet Office minister Ian McCartney said: "Too often people run down public services and the people working in them.
"But today the Central Science Laboratory in York has shown itself at the fore nationally in spearheading improvements that give a better deal for citizens."
The Central Government Beacon Scheme is aimed at raising the quality and re-sponsiveness of public service.
