Relate, the relationship guidance service, could close down its North Yorkshire operation because of a shortage of funds.
The move comes as couples in the region face up to the stressful Christmas period.
The charity could close down the whole of its north east operation, which covers North Yorkshire.
A spokeswoman said the financial crisis had arisen because of running costs, disappointing takings from its charity shops and partly because of clients' inability to pay the £30 fee for counselling sessions.
