I wish to draw your attention to the NSPCC's campaign for a Children's Commissioner in England.
Why should we have a special human rights body for children you may ask?
Because children's rights need special protection. They are emotionally, physically and mentally vulnerable yet they have no political power and it's difficult for them to use the judicial system. No existing statutory body has a specific focus on children's human rights.
Children need a strong, independent, apolitical body to represent them which is focused on the welfare of every child, not just those in poverty and the disadvantaged. We must prevent a child's rights being violated before they have to go into care.
Sweden, Norway, Austria, Iceland and Wales all have their own commissioners.
Why are the needs of children living in England being ignored? Let's make this issue a priority.
Mrs Lesley Jane,
Hanley House,
Abbott Street, York.
