YORK Schools Under-11s football team gained revenge for last season's defeat when they beat Nottingham 2-1 in a friendly at Wigginton.
Nottingham put York under early pressure but they weathered the storm with the defence of Mark Wilson, Will Holmes, Josh and Charlie Metcalfe working well as a unit.
Good work down the wings from Andrew Vis and Scott Nicols relieved some of the pressure and led to a penalty for York when Nicols was brought down. Carl Stewart slotted home the spot kick.
The visitors soon levelled from a volley to make the half-time score 1-1.
The second half saw York dominate with Liam Simpson controlling play from midfield. Then a long pass from Charlie Metcalfe and pressure by Dale Hunt caused a Nottingham defender to put the ball into his own net to hand York victory.
Five substitutes, Jamie Williamson, Adam Jones, Danny Penrose, Mick Elson and Dan Smith caused problems in the last 15 minutes, while skilful runs by Adam Jones and Phil Walters should have resulted in goals for York.
Manager Adam Cooper said: "This was a tremendous victory. The Under-11 team are becoming an exciting and hard-working attractive footballing side."
York Schools Under-12s drew 0-0 against Nottingham while the Under-14s lost 3-1 to Calderdale.
The Under-11s' next game is a training match against Dunnington Under-12s on Saturday. Full squad needed, meet at Dunnington at 9.30am. No subs needed, no shirt and tie, but bring sponsor money.
St John Fisher RC School, Harrogate, made it through to the quarter-final of the North Yorkshire County Cup with a 2-0 win against Wensleydale School (Leyburn).
Centre half Ben Hardy came forward to give the visitors the lead in the first half with his first-ever goal when he shot home after a corner.
The St John Fisher youngsters held their slim one-goal advantage until the last couple of minutes of the game when Tom Woollard fired home to send them into the quarter-final where they will entertain the winners of Scalby School (Scarborough) and Tadcaster Grammar School.
Thirsk School also got through to the last eight after a thrilling 7-6 penalty shoot out win following their 2-2 extra-time draw against King James School (Knaresborough).
Thirsk led at the break after a Martin McCarthy 15th minute effort but King James equalised and then took the lead early in the second half.
King James must have had thoughts of who they might meet in the next round when, with just 10 minutes remaining, Chris Everingham struck for Thirsk to send the tie into extra time.
Both defences played well and the scores remained the same after the extra period and a penalty shoot out was needed to separate the sides, which saw Thirsk run out 7-6 winners.
Thirsk are scheduled to travel to meet the winners of the Huntington v Harrogate Granby High School tie.
