Kirkbymoorside
THE third annual ploughing match of the Kirkbymoorside Young Farmers' Club was well supported, with 26 competitors taking part. It was held at Welburn Manor Farms, on the A170 Wombleton junction, by kind permission of Major J Shaw. Judges for the day were: Mr Ray Garbutt, Mr David Cockerill and Graham Cockerill. Results - Reversible: Simon Wass, Robert Scaling, Adam Turnbull. Conventional: A Pashby, S Wood, R Wood. Vintage mounted: R Wilson, R Ingham, A Taylor. Helmsley
OVER the last month, members have enjoyed talks from Brian Otterburn on Zetor & Landini Tractors and Dodson & Horrell Limited on horse and dog food, and we thank these people for giving up their time to talk to us. Also, members have been on a Ghost Tour of York, which was very good and plenty of fun was had by all. Three members took part in the Ryedale District Quiz at Pickering at which we came second; well done to them. Forthcoming events are our domino drive at Carlton village hall (above Helmsley) on Tuesday, December 5, at 7:30pm with a big raffle, all welcome, and our annual dinner dance on Saturday, January 13 at the Feathers Hotel, tickets £18. Rillington and district
THE AGM was held on October 4, with a good attendance of both advisory and members old and new. The officers for the new year were elected as follows: president, Anthony Milner; chairman, Diane Clarkson; vice-chairmen, James Kilby and Stuart Main; secretary, Tracey Ireland; programme secretary, Sarah Kilby; treasurer, Anna Maud.
On October 11, public speaking practice was held in Rillington village hall. Mr Chris Dale helped the club in preparation for the Ryedale District Public Speaking Competition, on October 26, at Ryedale Agricultural Centre. A vote of thanks was given by Helen Webster. On October 18, the club visited Bradshaw Flour Mill at Driffield. It was a very enjoyable and informative visit and a vote of thanks was given by Tom Watson. On October 26, the Ryedale Public Speaking Competition was held at Pickering Agricultural Centre. There was a very good turnout of members and parents. Rillington YFC was represented by a team in each age group. There was keen competition throughout the night, with success coming Rillington's way in the junior chairman (J Kilby); junior vote of thanks (H Webster); intermediate Brainstrust (J Teasdale, S Kilby, J Kilby and T Watson); and senior debating team (I Teasdale, S Maw, O Pratt, A Mason and T Watson). All winning competitors are hoping to represent Ryedale area in the county competition to be held at Granby High School, Harrogate, on December 3. Good luck to all who compete.
On November 1, a talk by John Harrison on farming and wildlife was cancelled due to flooding of the Church Rooms. On November 8, Mr Tim Southwell kindly gave a talk to Rillington YFC on the East Yorkshire Dialect. It was a very entertaining and enjoyable evening. A vote of thanks was given by Anna Maud. On November 15, Debbie Phillips visited Rillington YFC from the county office to talk to the club about 'Recruitment and Retention'. The club found the evening very helpful and useful. John Douglas gave a vote of thanks. On November 20, Rillington YFC joined Amotherby YFC for a 'safari supper'. The evening was very enjoyable with a good turnout from both clubs. Dining rooms and meals were kindly provided by: Mr and Mrs Kilby, starter and sweet; Mr and Mrs Shipley and Clare Whitwell, main course; Andy Wilson, coffee. Thanks to all who contributed dishes for the evening.
On November 22, Mr Chris Dale and Mr Derek Watson kindly revisited Rillington YFC to help with coaching the public speaking representatives for the county competition on December 3. The annual ploughing match will be held on December 10 (weather permitting), at Scagglethorpe, signposted off A64; entries on the day before 10am.
