Selby Town centre's Christmas lights will be switched on at 4pm this Saturday by comedian Tommy Cannon.

Tommy, who lives at Kelfield, will be assisted by Minster FM breakfast show presenter James Watt and the Mayor of Selby, Coun Keith Franks.

The festive entertainment will start at noon with singing and dancing in the Market Cross by Barlby Youth Forum.

Barlby Foottappers Band will be playing in Micklegate from 3pm and Selby Round Table's Father Christmas will tour the town centre on his sleigh about the same time.

At about 3.30pm, the Mayor will be ferried into Micklegate in a trap pulled by Santa's magic reindeer.

The winners of a best-dressed shop staff and best-dressed window competitions will be announced at 4pm, followed by the big switch-on.

There will also be a fireworks rockets' cascade over the town centre just after 4pm. This will last about 15 minutes and pet owners are being advised to keep their animals inside.

Yorkshire Cancer Research has organised some carol singing at Selby Town Hall, which will be led by Brayton High School pupils.

The charity's tree of light stands outside the town hall, and it plans to boost funds with bulb sponsorship and the sale of refreshments.

The Christmas tree in Micklegate will help to raise money for Alzheimer's Society's Selby branch through bulb sponsorship.
