A woman suffered serious head injuries when the car she was travelling in overturned on the A1 near Wetherby.
Queues of traffic tailed back roughly six miles in both directions as emergency services dealt with the crash at about 4.45pm yesterday.
The woman passenger, aged 48 and from the Tyne-and-Wear area, was unconscious when emergency crews arrived on the scene at the Kirk Deighton turn-off, two miles north of Wetherby.
The Red Honda Accord she and her husband, also 48, were travelling in left the road and rolled several times. She was trapped in the car for about 30 minutes before being cut free by firefighters.
She was taken to Harrogate District Hospital by ambulance suffering head, chest and possible leg injuries and later transferred to Leeds General Infirmary.
Her husband also had to be freed by firefighters. He was taken to Harrogate District Hospital with neck pains.
