CHILDREN across North Yorkshire could be in danger because of sub-standard school buses, according to the first annual report published by regional traffic commissioner Tom Macartney.
In his report, Mr Macartney promised to promote road safety actively throughout the North-East and the safety of school buses is one area in which he has expressed concern.
The issue of safety on school buses was highlighted by the Evening Press in March, when police warned that schoolchildren across North Yorkshire were being put in unacceptable danger because of sub-standard buses. Nine coaches and minibuses were taken off the road after roadside checks uncovered a catalogue of defects, including faulty brakes.
Mr Macartney said: "The Vehicle Inspectorate has agreed to an intensive monitoring of coaches to force standards higher and detect less capable operators."
Although the percentage of vehicles found to be unroadworthy in the North-East has not increased in the last 12 months, the probation rate still gives cause for concern as it is above the national average.
