TWO local women are celebrating this week having clocked up an impressive 100 years each.
Great-grandmother Dorothy Atkinson, who used to live in Marlborough Drive, Tadcaster, now lives in Holly Garth old people's home at Thorpe Willoughby, near Selby.
Mrs Atkinson has one daughter, Margaret Bradley, three granddaughters and three great-granddaughters.
After opening a congratulatory letter from the Queen, she celebrated her centenary with a party at the home where staff presented her with a personal stereo.
She then went on to a family celebration lunch at Monk Fryston Hall hotel. Mrs Atkinson said: "I still enjoy a glass of sherry and the staff here look after me very well."
Meanwhile, Acomb centenarian Olive Dickinson celebrates her 100th birthday today.
Mrs Dickinson, who was born in York and now lives at Oak Haven residential home in Acomb, was celebrating with family and residents this morning at the home.
"She wanted a quiet birthday," said Margaret Steele, an employee at the home. "She is a quiet lady, but I think she's secretly enjoying being 100."
Margaret had three sons and two daughters, three of whom are still surviving. She also has seven grandchildren and 14 grandchildren. Mrs Dickinson believes that she is very fortunate to have reached 100 years of age. "I owe it to clean living and contentment," she said.
