SUPPORTERS of York's St Leonard's Hospice will be hoping to come across no Scrooges when they give the Hospice Appeal 2000 a Christmas boost.
Staff and friends of the Coppergate Centre, in York, dressed in Dickensian costume, will be collecting donations for St Leonard's from shoppers before and after the big Christmas lights switch-on next week.
Lord Mayor of York Councillor Shan Braund, along with pantomime stars Berwick Kaler and Martin Barrass, will switch on the Coppergate Centre lights on Thursday (Nov 23) at 6.30pm.
The fundraising, which will go on throughout the day and into the evening, is being organised by Coppergate Centre manager Diana Dickson.
Land Securities, owners of the centre, will ensure the hospice receives a double boost by matching the amount donated by the public.
Diana said: "In previous years when we have collected money for St Leonard's, people have been extremely generous and, in true Dickensian spirit, we have great expectations of next week's fundraising."
