AT this time of year, I always think that it would be considerate on the part of householders to sweep up leaves (and hidden litter) which have fallen on pavements from their own overhanging trees and hedges.
Not only are these soggy leaves unsightly, they are also dangerous, sometimes resulting in broken limbs - particularly for the elderly. Owing to the recent floods, it will be weeks before council staff can get round to cleaning pavements, if at all.
In many countries, householders themselves are held legally responsible for the cleanliness of the area including pavements around their houses; it is perhaps, a pity that this is not the case here. If it were so, perhaps more funds would be released for things like swimming pools and other amenities which, judging by recent correspondence, most York citizens would like to have.
