Phoenix Dance Company is reviving excerpts from old shows and combining them with three new commissions inspired by past work for their new touring production.
From Thursday to next Saturday, at York Theatre Royal, the Leeds company celebrates the diversity of its 19-year history in 19 - Rewind & Come Again, a "kaleidoscope of dance, music, video and narration".
Excerpts selected from the Phoenix repertory are: Family (choreographed by Shapiro & Smith, 1992); Longevity (Gary Lambert, 1990); Neverstill (Sharon Donaldson, 1995); Spartan Reels (Bebe Miller, 1992); Subject Of The City (Pamela Johnson, 1991); Tainted Love (Tom Jobe, 1990); Templates Of Glory (Mark Baldwin, 1997) and Unbroken (Thea Nerissa Barnes, 1997).
These will be complemented by the new commissions by New York-trained artistic director Thea Nerissa Barnes and in-house choreographer Andile Sotiya: the Jamaican dance hall-inspired Brawta (Jamaican slang for 'a little extra'); the jazz dance Key Club, and the abstract, expressionist modern piece, Strange Fruit, a solo work danced by the South African Sotiya to Nina Simone's version of this civil rights protest song.
Why is Phoenix choosing to do a retrospective show in its 19th year rather than the more conventional 20th? "Several reasons made it the best choice for this year," says Thea. "I knew I was going to have a whole new crop of dancers, and as part of my review of the company's work I realised we had a whole heap of good stuff to call upon.
"We decided we'd do a retrospective as a way for the dancers to physically embody the history of the company, so they would come to have this tradition in their bodies and then put new ideas into the next show when we'll be looking forward.
"By giving them the chance to be steeped in Phoenix's history, they will then have the opportunity to spearhead the company's future with really diverse dance."
19 - Rewind & Come Again will be on the road until next July, and the new Phoenix will rise next September in House, a new selection of dances by Thea, Andile, Bawren Tavaziva and Melanie Teall. A new-build House, you could say.
