I visited York with my two granddaughters aged seven and ten, and we decided to have lunch in a caf. Thumbs down to a Ha Ha Canteen & Bar on New Street, where we were told in a haughty manner that 'children were not allowed in because of licensing laws'.
We said we didn't want to go into the bar area and would sit by the door but were abruptly told 'No'.
An unpleasant experience. My granddaughters thought that it was their fault, so we quickly explained that some establishments had an unwritten 'no child' policy.
Thumbs up to Betty's and The Slug & Lettuce who were friendly and welcoming, lots of smiles, very helpful and patient while the children chose from an exciting menu.
The Slug And Lettuce also have a licensed bar but with an area where families can sit. We weren't turned away, so I thank them for making our day special.
These places that turn children away need to be aware that they are the future and in a few years' time they will be adult customers who will remember the people who 'welcomed' them back then.
