Little bookworms in York are excitedly putting together a list of books they would love to read after winning a literacy grant from the Nescafe Kids Club Challenge.

Children from Clifton Moor Out-of-School Club won the £250 grant after applying for funding at the start of the autumn term. They were among 56 other clubs chosen for the fun, imaginative way they planned to introduce new literary sessions at the club.

The grant will be used to buy books for special needs children, such as noisy books, large writing books, tactile books and audio books, to replace books which are now worn out.

Anne Longfield, chief executive of the Kids Clubs Network, said: "As the days get shorter, kids are spending more and more time inside the after-school clubs and it's great to hear of so many fun ideas for entertaining them while also providing such valuable reading skills."

Gerhard Berssenbrugge, managing director of Nescafe, said: "We've had a staggering response to the Nescafe Kids Club Challenge this year and the Book-worm awards are no exception. We hope these Bookworm grants will help build creative and literacy skills at an early age."

The Nescafe Kids Club Challenge is a two-year partnership between Nescafe and the Kids Club Network that aims to award a grant to a children's club around the UK every day until the end of 2001.
